A quick chat with Danny Sullivan

Posted on December 14, 2006 - Filed Under Interviews |

Danny SullivanYou seem to be the latest buzz Danny, looks like your loyal friends in search are going to become SMX patriots, how does this make you feel?

It’s obviously great to hear. I think one of the best things is that having done this so long, the entire experience of a new site and new series has left me more energized. Seeing the reaction of others, maybe it’s getting some of the old timers and advanced people excited as well. That’s great, if so.

I got to admit that I didn’t really get it but then took a look at your three fresh sites and was really impressed with Search Marketing Expo aka SMX, tell us something we have not yet learned about these new conferences.

There’s not much more to tell yet, other than I’m going to try and do something different, fun and educational at the first one for the intermediate and advanced marketer. I’ve got my thinking cap on over the holidays!

You say that SMX is not for beginners but is more geared to those already in the mix, could the logic behind this simply mean that if you want to learn about this stuff you will be there? Please explain.

It’s easier to explain this way. When the conference isn’t geared toward beginners, you hopefully take the discussion up a notch. Every been in a conversation with someone who knows nothing about SEM? You start explaining the basics, almost talking slow like dealing with someone who doesn’t speak your language natively. Then you encounter an advanced marketer. Suddenly, now that you’ve hit another native speaker, all the slang is coming out, the shorthand, the entire conversation goes up a notch. I love beginners, bringing them into the space. But I’m already doing stuff for them this year in other venues. So SMX will be a place to be different.

Google says it goes to marketing events to help out “mom and pops” does this mean Google, Mom and Pop will not be invited to attend SMX?

Mom and Pop can come, if they feel they know the basics cold about search marketing, for this particular SMX show. Plenty of “Mom & Pops” are more pro than some big companies. The search engines are obviously going to be invited. They take part in shows to help interact with marketers of all levels.

Is SEO soon to be replaced by Internet Marketing or is this just natural selection?

They aren’t the same thing. SEO is a subset of internet marketing, and I expect it isn’t dying out any time soon.

Ah yes, thank you Danny!

Newsflash: Danny get’s a speeding ticket.

Nice interview Aaron. One follow up question I’d ask Danny is how he’s going to keep out the hoards of beginners. Of course, I’m asking tongue in cheek, but in a way I wonder if having him say the SMX is for the advanced SEOs will make it even more attractive for the wannabe and beginner types. Maybe people will need to pass a test before they can buy their conference pass?

Yes good question, maybe Danny will drop in again to answer.

Sounds exciting — a lot of new opportunities and doors are opening from this. Can’t wait to see what your thinking cap will yield! Best of luck, Danny.
