Adam Lasnik SEO Basics Seminar

Posted on September 7, 2006 - Filed Under Google News |

Enter the Firstgov.gov SEO Basics seminar by Adam Lasnik from Google.

We’ll cover the basics of how search engines work and how you can successfully adjust your site to be both human and search-engine-friendly. From live site dissections (no holds barred!) to jargon-busting (what’s a 301 redirect and why should you care?) to lots of Q&A, this session will be absolutely interactive and packed full with actionable information.

SEO Roundtable

Save your $30 and continue optimizing your sites.

Someone over on Threadwatch.org also pointed out that you can just download the information on the seminar but I will also save it here for when and if it is deleted.

Google has been helping librarians learn about spam and now they are helping .GOV to succeed in search engines via optimization? What about regular folks?

This doesn’t give me much hope for my educational and environmental product website. Just one page that is optimized on and .GOV or .EDU can outrank my entire site and I am not even close to being a spammer on stuff I care about!

Personal joke for Lee Odden, beware of the future Jargon Busting Team, they are coming to erase your SMO homie!

I do not agree with SEORoundtable or Adam Lasnik, a basic class on SEO approved by Google would be the BEST SEO seminar anyone could attend.

    Hi Aaron,

I understand and respect your concerns and appreciate your enthusiasm for having the world become more SEO-savvy. I’d like to reassure you, though, that it’s our aim at Google to help ALL Webmasters.

Though we’re indeed doing in-person Webmaster training in this situation for a limited group (with a goal to make taxpayer-funded sites more accessible), we’ve opened the floodgates *online * :). To my knowledge, we offer by far the most comprehensive set of Webmaster Tools (via Webmaster Central) *AND* open-to-the-public Webmaster Help groups of any major search engine.

So, while it may sound cliched, this particular presentation to gov’t folks is just part of the beginning. Though I can’t promise that we’ll be doing national roadtours anytime soon, I’m confident that we’ll find more ways to spread best Webmaster practices (focusing on accessibility, user-friendly site navigation tips, etc.) around the world.

Thanks for your frank feedback :)

And from my point of view, these people invited Adam and I thought it was a great idea for him to present. We talk at conferences, on forums, on blogs, on groups, and lots of other places, so talking to government webmasters is just another way to get the word out.

I have been leaning toward doing some more SEO-101 posts on my blog; a lot of people ask about super-advanced stuff, but covering the basics might well have a larger overall impact.

  3. Aaron Pratt Says:

Wow, that is a pretty good sales pitch there Adam, but I understand your points. ;)

As you might know, my concern is for those who do good basic SEO but get clobbered by the BIG boys algorithmically.

Optimizing .GOV sites will crush many (sorry for the overused sympathy getting expression) “Mom and Pops” so please be aware of this when you make tweaks to your algorithm, we are watching.

Matt - I believe that just one “SEO Basics” page on Google would go a long way. It is hard navigating your blog sometimes with all the noise.

I am also aware of the “opened floodgates”, thank you, it really is a beautiful thing. :)

  4. Lee Says:

Psst. Hey Aaron, keep it down. You’re letting everyone in on the scam: “Be relevant, rank higher.”

As far as I’m concerned with the SEO classes, the more education, the better.

Hey Matt, we shot some SEO 101 video over at AllBusiness.com last week - there’s a huge need for that especially with the SME market.

However, everyone and I mean EVERYONE would be far more interested in what you have to offer along the lines of SEO 101. Am looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

    This we agree upon.

  6. Igor Berger Says:

Aaron, you know how I stand on all this.

Google support for Webmaster is nothing more than smoke and mirrors.

It is our job as Developers, Webmasters, and SEO’s to guide the average Webmaster to Google Quality Guidelines.

There is a lot of noise and power struggle out there, so it kind of hard to do.
So the only thing we can hope for is to impart what we can on people who are willing to listen.

Like in Werewolf, we know, but they think they know.

Aaron, come check out my World and join the ball.

Before my online magazine’s launch May 19, never knew that there was such a thing as getting listed on Google. Before July, never knew what an algorithm was. Before September, never heard the term “SEO.” Before today, didn’t know that page rank wasn’t the same as the listing in search engines.

Started reading webmaster stuff on Google this week. Now no longer agnostic. Adam Lasnik and Matt Cutts are my gods!

Yes, please, please, please you guys, do an SEO 101 book, film, video, CD, anything! You can make Google even bigger by helping people learn how it works, and all it works for. Example: I just now learned from Aaron’s blog that Google Maps could have been used to check out which houses were ‘crispy’ in the recent fires. Please share your knowledge with know-nothing newbys like me! You may not realize how much it’s needed.

Suggestion: “THE GOOGLE BOOK.” Write about everything from email header details to SEO to setting up a blog; aim it at the beginners. You will rule in heaven!
