Can SEO regulate itself?

Posted on September 4, 2007 - Filed Under News |

Adam asks “who should regulate SEO” and includes me and a few other folks in his “meme” at the bottom of his post. He also mentions that SEOs can not be trusted to self regulate and passes the torch to the search engines to do so. I mainly pay attention to Google so let me write a few words about what I know. Google already “regulates” low quality SEO via algorithms (and sometimes human editors). Can SEO regulate itself? No!

In related news John Chow (johnchow.com) doesn’t rank for his name in Google, many are saying it is a ban. Surely areas of his blog are not favored by Google and other smart engines but a ban? Some are also noticing that several directories are not ranking for their names as well. In my experience, sites lose their “names” just before they go supplemental. Looks like John and these pagerank selling directories have been regulated.
