I’m curious how they get their data. They say “The search engines listed below either provide their complete search logs and these are imported in full into our database, or samples are collected by scraping search statistics from ISP logs and other sources.” It doesn’t say which search engines provide data but it seems suprising that any search engine would do this. Also, how are they able to get ISP logs! Is this data freely available?

I’ve been using Keyword Discovery for a while now (the paid version), and I’m pretty happy with it, but I’ve never been able to get a straight answer about where they get their data, either. I have a hunch it comes from click tracking on their paid inclusions. It’s owned by Trellian, who also offer paid inclusion services with Yahoo. They might also be buying data or have some kind of deal with ISPs or something to supplement that. That’s a complete guess though, since they don’t seem to want to reveal where the data comes from. Even though they say it’s data from the past 12 months, the data seems quite outdated. It’s most noticeable if you do searches for words that should be popular now, but are seasonal or tied to a year. For example, a search for calendars shows 2003 calendars is the most popular year-related search, followed by 2005 and 2004 calendars. 2007 didn’t even make the top 100 searches. I have a hard time believing those numbers are accurate for the past 12 months.
