Google Algorithmically Reduces Googlebombs

Posted on January 25, 2007 - Filed Under Google News, Reputation |

I am not sure many follow what I am up to often and may have wondered why I made a post about Google bombing John Mccain recently. (unless you are michael martinez - hehe)

I did so to:

  1. Defend the honor of a righteous American.
  2. As part of a personal study on how Google deals with Googlebombing today.

What I found is exactly what Google describes.

My favorite quote:

When we’re faced with a bad search result or a relevance problem, our first instinct is to look for an automatic way to solve the problem instead of trying to fix a particular search by hand. Algorithms are great because they scale well: computers can process lots of data very fast, and robust algorithms often work well in many different languages. That’s what we did in this case, and the extra effort to find a good algorithm helps detect Googlebombs in many different languages.

If you also do a search for failure our president no longer shows up which is a very good thing. Future online democracy should not be ruled by those who look to ruin good people. Think about that the next time you take part in a lame SEO contest to assassinate someone’s character.

Who’s looking out for you?

I think Google needs to manually adjust Googlebombed results. There is really no algorithm for it, because think about all the sites that have massive BL and such that are REAL. I just think another math equation for this could affect other sites.

Brad - Well that is a good point but this is very real and so far it looks like it is working like a charm.

Interesting point, if an algorithm is like nature when you change something will it affect other areas? If you can find these areas let Google know, I am sure they would be “all ears”.

I am really having a fun time with this one! ;-o

I don’t see the connection you’ve drawn between me and John McCain. I have no desire to see him become President, but if you’re implying I’ve launched some sort of SEO campaign against him, it ain’t me.

I think I’ve blogged about him and his stupid proposed law (which would require Web forum operators to track convicted felons) once. That’s it.

    Aaron,

    I agree with you…

It still comes down to relevance, and always should. It was fun for black hats to go and take out their frustrations of ineffective long-term organic results, but the insecurities of people should have no effect on the rest of us.

This will squash the people that think they have some super power, just because they could get a page to rank for something that it shouldn’t, of course, now they have all that free time to screw with people’s blogs.

LOL Michael, what I meant is that only you might discover what I am “up to” just as you did here, it was a compliment but did require further clarification, sorry.

I often tests things out on this blog, not to hurt anyone but to better understand how Google works. My post about John Mccain was done to see if I could use my website to push him above a nasty Googlebomb. What turned out to happen was that Google also had the same concerns about “Googlebombing” and was taking care of it algorithmically which is a beautiful thing really. :)

    pittfall - Yes indeed!
