Google hooks up with Stopbadware.org

Posted on February 26, 2007 - Filed Under Google News |

I happen to be a fan of pink goggles and other tools we can use to view the internet with new eyes. As reported not long ago Google made an interesting post about badware warnings and now are improving this new service and hooking up with stopbadware.org.

Two improvements in Webmaster tools:

Notifications

Now instead of simply informing webmasters that their sites have been flagged and suggesting next steps, we’re also showing example URLs that we’ve determined to be dangerous.

Email notifications

In addition to notifying webmaster tools users, we’ve also begun sending email notifications to some of the webmasters of sites that we flag for badware.

As a futurist I often sit back and meditate on subjects for long periods of time, what kind of interface will be useful to webmasters and novices? Will webmaster tools someday show link quality, color coded to teach you more about what is paid content? Is this the type of stuff that will send some to the basement with rolls of tinfoil or is it just another “tool” that friendly Google wants to offer webmasters to better understand their world? I think webmaster tools have a purpose, but it’s still trying to find that. I do not wear that tinfoil hat very often :P, but I think WMTools were designed to ease the complaints that Google was receiving. It gives the webmaster minimal knowledge with regards to what they see, but it also gives the sense that a webmaster has “some control by using it.
