It is all about pagerank
Good webmasters never forget, remember not long ago how Google removed the label for “supplemental results”? I tried to put a positive spin on it but today it is back again showing that two Google indexes still exist and the line between seen content and trash is not yet as narrow as they promised it to be. I also notice some claiming that the recent lowering of forward pagerank didn’t change their rankings, well that is not entirely correct, people on the lower end of the pagerank scale are dropping off like crazy.
Let me cut and paste just one of the many recent posts to Google groups from webmasters who have lost position for their keywords and phrases:
Our homepage (http://www.apwagner.com) is no longer appearing in the results for appliance parts. All of our other organic results seem fine. We were in the top 10 of these results for a very long time until yesterday. Appliance parts generates a lot of our traffic. Any ideas??
Doing a quick search using this cool Supplemental Index Ratio Calculator shows the above website is currently 98% supplemental! See results here then check your own website(s). You want to know a secret? Almost all the websites I checked that were complaining of “lost position” have the majority of their pages in the supplelemtal trash bin waiting for pagerank to come out and play.
Again, websites go supplemental from lack of pagerank; pages that go supplemental lose search position until they gain more green fuel.
Three more points while I feel like sharing a few thoughts:
- Your job as a webmaster and SEO is to build websites at a slow, metered pace according to how much human interest (in the form of links/pagerank) you get.
- If you do not have any references (enough pagerank) from other sites you better stop building content at a foolish rate because you surely will go supplemental. Though, your most current content will rank.
- Those of you who ask Google to not show pagerank in the toolbar are foolish, it is all about pagerank, still!
Who wins in this current serp? Marketers. Who loses? Once again, ordinary webmasters who have never even heard of the phrase social media marketing, linkbait, Matt Cutts or Danny Sullivan. THAT I take issue with and would be interested in what our friend Mr. Cutts has to say about it!

I agree with you, PageRank is still important. It is a fundamental building block of the Google search engine. Some people claim that PageRank is not important anymore, but since you need some quantity of the green fairy dust to keep your pages alive in the main index it seems pretty important to me. Being a supplemental zombie is not a nice thing for a site.
