Loss of the ability to pass pagerank

Posted on January 11, 2007 - Filed Under Tips |

Here are the 3 things that will cause the loss of the ability to pass pagerank in Google.

  1. Selling Text Links - Links that use the nofollow are fine.
  2. Paid Reviews - As in PayPerPost and ReviewMe, if you are doing “paid” reviews use the nofollow tag and clearly state that it is a paid post.
  3. SEO Contests - Ah yes, Google doesn’t want a website that has HUGE PageRank™ (after winning a contest) sharing it with ringtone and travel sites.

Why might Google be concerned with people sharing PR in the above ways? You got it, PageRankā„¢ matters and this doesn’t even scratch the surface of loss of trust.

Don’t believe me? Look closely at what Matt says here, thanks Matt! ;o)

Update: I was asked where Matt states that “paid” post require the nofollow tag, listen here.

Note: Some may think I am a dick for pointing these “truths” out but I find snake oil advice (that can hose a website in Google) to be even more troubling. The above are facts, if we like them or not is open to debate.

Update: Looks like I blogged about it here: http://www.seobuzzbox.com/paid-posts-nofollow-tag/ (listen very closely).

Not sure how you missed it graywolf (maybe you should read my blog more hehe) but Matt cleary states the rules in this outstanding WebProNews video: http://videos.webpronews.com/2006/11/21/pubcon-exclusive-interview-with-matt-cutts/

I linked to it from: http://www.seobuzzbox.com/paid-posts-nofollow-tag/

    Nuff’ said!

  5. graywolf Says:

well that’s the problem with videos and no transcripts I’ve got to listen to whole thing.

If “reviews” are bad how are the “reviews” for Yahoo directory ok?

  6. graywolf Says:

    Listening now

“once people get into viral and buzz marketing it’s white hat”

no disrespect intended but if you don’t think social media sites are being played in a major way, there’s nothing I can do to bring you back to reality

  7. Aaron Pratt Says:

    Talking to me?

Social media sites ARE being played bigtime. :)

I updated the post, I am just stating the facts, it doesn’t mean I agree with everything I find.

  8. graywolf Says:

ok got it see that’s BS double talk from google. They say “build for people not search engines” but if they don’t like it they change the rules in the middle of the game, ” we think you should with machine readable code”.

No follow was created for controlling spam google then bastardized it for their own intent after the fact changing the rules in the middle of the game again to suit their own intrests

  9. mad4 Says:

If payperpost and reviewme start giving major problems to Google then I have no doubt they will try to do something about it. Thats not going to happen for 12 months at least.

In the meantime the only people who are using reviewme and payperpost to “game” the search engines are the same people who are link baiting and doing things the way Matt Cutts wants them to so its just not an issue.

PageRank is definitely the fuel that runs the mothership.

  11. Dave White Says:

Page rank drives the webmasters crazy no matter if it is high or low.Everyone want to increase the page rank and are ready to do loads of things.
