Move Over DMOZ
I have been trying to get myself off a designer drug medical students use to stay up for weeks to get their homework done called Provigil. It also is used by those of us who suffer from ADD (attention deficit disorder) which allows us to focus (but can also deny us of our creativity).
I have been using these creative bursts to build and dream about a better directory. This new neighborhood of links I named “The Environmental Directory” for the following reasons:
- The environment is a place that we must all exist in that can be over-run and ruined by pollution.
- The internet is an environment with a vast network of links that can be lowered in quality and yes ruined by spam.
Enter The Environmental Directory - a directory that even Matt Cutts from Google might approve of?
You know how newbies in the SEO forums (who complain that their sites are not being crawled) often fall prey to bad advice about link building? My plan is to build a directory that is of such high quality that just one PR4-5 link in it would allow good sites to begin their journey.
Help me in building a better directory, $99 for a lifetime membership will allow it to adapt. If you would like to become an editor give me a jingle @ admin@seobuzzbox.com
You also may be saying, “How can a paid directory become a quality directory when money is involved”? Easy, there are extremely strict guidelines, I just deleted 99% of the latest 1k of submissions to give you an idea about how difficult it will be to get in.
I also have a Home and Garden Directory that I have been protecting from spammy link neighborhoods. It is completely empty (with a big pr if it matters to people) but almost ready to weigh anchor.
Read more about what you can do to get your valued link (it’s a work in progress so don’t get all uptight on me now). :)

Hey dude,
I gotta be honest with you…I like the idea of the directory, but I don’t think the concept of adding paid links to it will fly for a few reasons:
1) There’s not much to this site other than a directory.
2) The directory itself doesn’t have an environmental “theme” or “skin”. Looks like a default phpLD skin to me.
3) $99 for a lot of environmental sites is probably too much money for the direct traffic they’d receive, as many of them are regionally based.
4) Environmental site owners tend not to be especially concerned about SEO and more concerned about their message, so if you’re plugging SEO benefits (which I don’t think you are), it won’t matter.
For example, I’ve designed/developed/redeveloped 3 environmental sites in the past year:
http://www.lightenupontario.ca
http://www.greenbuildingfest.com
http://www.sbcanada.org
And if I turned to the owners of these sites and said “you can spend $99 to get listed in this directory”, they’d take one look at the site and say “why”? Two of the sites not-for-profit sites and two of the sites do enough marketing through other means and organic link building that they really don’t have to. And that’s three sites that probably deserve to be there but won’t simply because of economic reasons (maybe I’m a tad biased, but I think they’re well-built sites).
Sorry dude…but I think you need to think this through a bit more in terms of who you’re trying to list in the site and the audience you’re trying to reach with it.

I want to also remove the “reciprocal” link option and offer “non profits” free submissions. Feel free to submit those “client” sites and I will take a look at them.
SEO’s who market sites in a search engine compliant way will benefit more from one single link in my directory(s) then doing a large destructive link building campaign. I have the proof that a single link from a trusted directory is all a site needs. Then the important factors like good content are required.
But again, everything I do is for fun and games, if this idea succeeds great/if not/then - I will launch another one.
Thanks for airing your concerns, I will transform to meet your clients needs.

Cool deal, dude.
But it says reciprocal link isn’t required. Yet when I fill it in for a non-prof submission, it says it is.
I’d have to ask if I can submit then, since most of them don’t give away links unless there’s some form of partnership involved beyond just a link exchange. (e.g. lightenupontario.ca and weconserve.ca are projects put on by Conservation Council of Ontario.)
I’m not trying to ride your ass or make life more difficult for you or anything like that. I’m just trying to help you make the directory better (and get my clients’ stuff included. ;) )

Your wish is my command check again.
:)
I am currently working on a “suggest a category” field as well.
October 15th, 2006 at 8:54 am
Oh. Whoops. So I guess I shouldn’t have filled it in twice. :(
Sorry dude. I filled it in because there’s no message that confirmed anything.
Still, I like your effort and the fact that you actually listen to people. That will serve you well.

Yeah no problem, wish I was a little more of a code monkey but with coffee I do ok.
There is a message now in there for non profits and personal sites, I would suggest submitting them once again because the “if” code was hosed, sorry.
It also doesn’t allow people to submit multiple URL’s if they are from the same domain now.
I pretty much removed the word “reciprocal” from the code, reciprocal is so early 90’s dude!
Could we safely say that reciprocating is a form of masturbation?
Matt Cutts will also be happy because the option for 3 way link spamming is gone.
And life is good! :)

Cool.
I submitted Lighten Up, Ontario! (The http://www.lightenupontario.ca one). Did it go through? I’ll do the other two after.

Nah, I’m cool with that. I was actually going to suggest making a Canada subcategory (since there’s a great deal involving sustainable building and green issues in Canada). You just beat me to it.
Thanks, man.
October 15th, 2006 at 4:28 pm
Okay, added sbcanada.org (put it under Canada…not sure if maybe you want to put a Sustainable Buildings category in there somewhere.)
I got a few others others but I need to check to see how they officially operate.
Thanks again, dude.

Have you added your name to Dave Naylor’s SEO blog list yet? Looks like a one-time offer.

Talk about a bad link neighborhood, yeah I am now fish #81 on Dave’s list. ;)
October 17th, 2006 at 6:56 am
Oh how sad, looks like Dave didn’t include my link in his post, either that or he hasn’t allowed it to show via wordpress admin. yet, interesting, maybe he doesn’t like the idea of website intent, protecting a network or quality of links? ;)
October 17th, 2006 at 8:07 am
hmm? odd. I’m sure he’s getting spammed to death on that one, so I would imagine a few legitimate posts get deleted when going through comment moderation.
October 17th, 2006 at 7:51 pm
You were correct John, I was able to post a comment now.

Cool, congrats, at PR6 link is nothing to sneeze at if its really going on the homepage of an SEO blog. Now I just wish he’d put a list of people who have blogs or ecommerce sites on residential HVAC products, then I’d have something to add!
