Offering free SEO advice
I like this new trend of offering free SEO advice, it is kind of what I want my blog to do. The fees people pay for consulting advice are just too much and most novice webmasters are only looking for a few bits of advice to turn them in the right direction. The problem I see with the offering of free advice is that you have to trust the messenger, is the SEO offering good advice, poor advice or snake oil?
What are some examples of good SEO advice?
Smarter Linking - SEOs are obsessed with links but many have got it wrong, seek only earned organic links from the start and you will see your website do well in future search results.
Avoid Canonicals - Learn what a canonical URL is and choose your preferred domain in Google Webmaster Tools.
Learn about PageRank - Learn about incorrect pagerank distribution and how it can cause supplemental results in Google.
What are some examples of bad SEO advice?
Weak SEO - Do not take part in weak SEO tactics that do not focus on long term results. Engaging in defensible traffic in reality is poor advice for business.
Paying your way into search - Avoid paid posts that also will violate future search engine guidelines.
Preserve your pagerank - Become aware that you can lose your ability to pass pagerank if you take part in most of the above.
There are just a few bits of advice I offer from this blog, also notice that the advice has more to do with webmastering than SEO, why? It is a fact that sometimes good SEO is no SEO so keep it real, don’t follow those who offer weak SEO advice for long term results if you care about showing up in search engines like Google.

You forgot not to talk about tangentally relevant stuff in order to avoid ranking for terms you never intended to. ;)

Thanks for the free SEO advice. I don’t have $1,000 to spend on all the fancy conferences. So I get my info for free from blogs like yours. Oh, and the SEO company I work for.
