SEO on a shoestring

Posted on January 3, 2007 - Filed Under Budget SEO |

I have some pretty basic rules that allow me to do my own SEO on a shoestring.

Never pay for software - My sites are database driven Wordpress blogs and my directories use a PHP link directory script, both are free and easy to edit.

Use the barter system - If you need someone to port a theme barter services with someone who has that skill. You can meet a lot of extremely interesting people by trading services. Need some free SEO tips? Let’s trade!

Only seek earned links - A website built at a natural rate is often of more value than a Digg manipulated buzz blog. Do you have staying power? If you own your sites and are not pressured to perform, you got all the time in the world, so relax - the links will come. Also notice that Google is more weighted to reward those who play fair.

No overhead cost - Work from home and do not be pressured to sell out. My thoughts are, “If I got a roof over my head and my family is healthy, then life is good”! You will not find any “paid links” on my sites and my directories are only “paid” to filter out spam.

Have a written list of goals - Spend your time learning how to write, you can only do this by writing more so “writing” should be at the top of your goals.

Be honest with yourself - Try to be creative in areas that interest you or you will never produce. Yes, I could make bundles competing in affiliate areas like electronics and wedding supplies but I have no interest in those areas and even money will not encourage me. I enjoy gardening, building stuff and observing others so these are the places I play. How about you?

Only launch a few ideas at a time - The only flaw in the above system is that there is often not much time for new content when you “do it yourself”. Develop a system that allows you to focus the majority of your time on writing, then stick to your goal and modify as needed.

Sorry for the attention getting “Digg styled” post, just a few thoughts.

Aaron, this is a great article. My only quibble would be that its not about SEO, despite the title, its about how to build a great site generally, and thats far more than SEO :)

    Keep up the good work!

I could be wrong but SEO will be more about quality content and crawlability in the future Lea. ;)
