What’s hot in Google Gaming this year?
Multiple site ownage in Google’s organic SERPS.
Dave Dugdale has a legitimate beef with Google as he desribes in Consumer Source Interactive Owns Atlanta. Have you ever noticed multiple websites all owned by the same company ruling the top 5-10 positions in Google? I have been noticing this for years and it doesn’t take a degree in rocket science to see that Google is failing miserably in policing this area. I sell a handmade product and could point to one person who owns multiple websites that all rank with authority in Google, crosslink and self promote to own an entire industry. I am not a tattler but boy is it tempting to expose the weakness in Google’s algorithm in this area because it is extremely lame and unfair. This is something to watch and for those of you who think Google monitors whois data and sites gaming them from the same IP, think again.

Aaron,
Thanks for posting my concern on your blog. I am glad someone else thinks Google needs to work on this issue.
I enjoyed your reference to Rock Science. :)

No problem, these types of things have gone on for too long, if Google is serious about a more democratic internet they will work on it, Dax is a rocket scientist and extremely amusing guy. ;)

So are you suggesting that all of the concerns about domain ownership changes and hiding your registration of multiple sites is unfounded? Or is it more likely that Google knows who owns what, but multiple sites in a network doesn’t necessarily mean the network will be treated as spam?

Google has a simple rule, it’s “all must be done algorithmically” and sinse all is done algorithmically there is currently no fix, this is just a guess.
If Google was to throw a beatdown in this area they also could make many mistakes so maybe they handle it with kid gloves?

On the consultant side, it can be great if you can tell your client that their multiple sites are taking up prime real estate on Google rankings.
But the second I become a consumer, it’s annoying. I want there to be variety in my results. Even if it’s a difference in prices or service for the same exact product. But often, the same product is sold with the same factors among business owners with multiple sites.
I wonder if personalization will affect this at all?
